Hana Highway

 

The Hāna Highway is a 68-mile (109 km) long stretch of Hawaii State Routes 36 and 360 which connects Kahului with the town of Hāna in east Maui. On the east after Kalepa bridge, Hana Highway continues to Kīpahulu as Route 31 (Piilani Highway), the first section of which is unofficially considered to be part of Hāna Highway. Although Hāna is only about 52 miles (84 km) from Kahului, it takes about 2.5 hours to drive when no stops are made as the highway is very winding and narrow and passes over 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one-lane bridges. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hāna, virtually all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. That one bridge, badly damaged by erosion, has been replaced by a parallel structure by a portable steel Bailey bridge erected by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

 

Our views on the Hana Highway

The road….as seen in the aerial view above it is just corner after corner.

Waterfalls are hidden just off the highway everywhere.  We didn’t stop at very many this time around.  We tried to get to a certain one, but the locals here aren’t very friendly and like to keep people from going on some trails……how they stop you.  First of signs and since that doesn’t always work animal skins.  Well believe me I’m not going to try and by pass a smelly animal skin.

This church is located at Ke’aene Penisula.  it was the only thing standing after a tsunami in 1946.

On the road was this little hole…..oh it’s a cave!  We took along our flashlights to crawl through it.  It was fun to watch all the cars go by.  They probably wondered what we were doing as it’s not too easy to see from the road.

Another fascinating stop on the road was the Venus Pool.  Right next to this freshwater (ok it still was salty) was the roaring ocean.  This pool was huge and made for a great refreshing swim.  If you want the full story on this, you’ll have to ask in person or on the phone.
