John Flokstra





In Memory of John:

On Monday, January 25, the Lord called into eternal rest his child, John Flokstra, aged 75.  

He was predeceased by his wife Rita in September 2014, and by his brother Frank and brother-in-laws Bill vanEgmond and Klaas Prins. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Elaine (Marcel) Jacobi, Harold (Shannon) Flokstra, Andrew (Teresa) Flokstra, Sharon (Raymond) Vandeburgt, Quentin (Jessica) Flokstra, Carla (Dave) VanLaar.  He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Kelsey, Jasmine, Kent, Danica, Ashlee, Cole, Regan, Aaron, Landen, Kierra, Malachi, Nikko, Alexis, Benjamin, Micaiah, Naomi, Adelle, Beth, Ezra, Judah.  He will also be dearly missed by his siblings Cor (Emma) Flokstra, Tina (Ken) Linde, Bernie Flokstra, (Henny) Flokstra, Margaret VanEgmond, Cynthia (Casey) Admiraal and siblings in-law (An) Prins, Fake (Henny) Prins, Harry (Klazien) Prins, Roel (Bertha) Prins and many nieces and nephews.

John was born in Ruinerwold, the Netherlands on September 17, 1940 to Klaas and Jantje Flokstra.  In 1950, he immigrated with his family to Canada.  He moved with his family from Alberta, to BC, to Ontario and then finally back to BC where they settled in Abbotsford. Here he helped on the family farm. He began a new career as an electrician, opening his own company in 1970 known as Flokstra Electric Contracting Ltd.  On November 1, 1972 he married his loving wife Rita Prins from the Netherlands and they made their home in Abbotsford, BC.  

In those years John enjoyed family life with his wife and 6 children, running a successful electrical business in both the residential & agriculture industry.  He was passionate about his business and always had a pen handy in case any customer or supplier called him.  Generator sales also became a big part of the business in the later years.  

His devotion to the Lord was evident and he was an active leader in his church and school community. John enjoyed travelling with Rita and had many good memories of trips throughout Canada and Europe. He loved the role of grandfather to his 20 grandchildren.  He also enjoyed giving sound financial advice to all who were willing to listen.   

Although life was a health struggle in the last 5 years due to a stroke in April 2011 and then a diagnosis of kidney cancer in September 2015, by God’s grace he continued to press on and lead people with encouragement from the Bible.  He testified “My hope is in God all day long.”  John will be missed for his encouraging words to all who visited him.  

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7

A little bubbly

This was the very first night that I officially slept well.  Finally transitioned over to the Dutch time zone.... Started the day with by filling the stomach with a good Dutch style breakfast.  If you're not Dutch could you guess what it is? With full stomachs we headed out for the day.  It was a rather frightening start down the skinny Dutch little road.  It barely can handle a bike and a car passing each other.  So to our surprise a massive semi truck was barreling down the road.  We pulled over in a pullout but  became trapped between a large truck and the canal. That canal was not looking too pretty for a swim.... Glad we didn't end up going for that swim and the we had no extra rental car bills to pay as the truck nearly missed the sideview mirror.  After safely arriving to the park n' ride we caught the bus.  This is a fantastic system if you're in Holland!  It cost 5 Euro to park the car and ride the bus for up to 5 people! ...

Trips and treasures

A little while ago I put the link back up on my social media page from a blog about Mother's Day.  Although I get very emotional about the day and the upcoming to the day with my precious Mom being in heaven, I do remember that I have the honour of celebrating motherhood and celebrating with other mothers in my life.  I know it can be a difficult day for many in different ways.   My one little guy who hangs out with me a lot gave me a special treat when I was down....how can you not resist his smile, with a card, cup of water and an apple all delivered with that big smile and even bigger heart. Shortly after that day I was given the privilege of going on a much desired field trip with my daughter.  If you know me at all, or even through this blog you know how much I desire the ocean and the wonders of it.  This trip to Salt Spring Islands did not fail me or my wonder of our wonderful creator.  We have so much more to experience from the ocean..... ...

2021

 Turned the calendar to 2021 a while ago and just have not sat down behind the computer to type away in a while.  I just had those summer 2020 blog posts waiting to be completed.  At last that goal was accomplished and I feel like the rest of 2020 went awash......I made a video to summarize our year and felt like that was good enough to complete the year.   I won't say our 2021 had the most marvellous start.  Our family was in isolation and I can't remember what day it was of 24 days being inside our home that we rolled the new year in.  However we were loved upon by many family members and friends over the time of being indoors.  Also what better time in the world to be "stuck" at home as you can get your grocery deliveries and any other shopping done and delivered all within 24 hours.  We did not suffer.  We may have been a little stir crazy at points, but we made the best of it!
