Sharks and Rays

What a day!  The sunshine is beaming once again and the palm trees are swaying. Today was time to explore the ocean waters of the Caribbean. We jumped on a boat about 50m away from our condo and headed into the sea while the warm sun rays beamed down on us.  We arrived at Mexico Rocks a popular snorkel destination. First thing we saw....a shark. 2 came swimming up to the boat in record speeds and frightened me. I think I learned that I have a shark phobia.  Jumping into the water to snorkel after that wasn’t easy for me. I did it though.  Death gripping D’s hand the whole trip.

It’s a good thing I managed to miss the site of the next 2 sharks that were swimming close by.  I am however not afraid of rays....I had one swim less than an arms length away from the my belly. That was kind of cool! We could see lots of rays from the boat as welll. Some of them are huge. What graceful creatures in the sea. 
The second location we snorkelled at I relaxed in the boat.  Chatted to our tour guide and learned a little more about local life. Elementary school is mandatory in Belize. However anything above that you must pay for. The man touring us Hiel, was 69 years you d and has been doing things in around and on the ocean since he was 12. At 15 there were no tourists, by 18 he said some and now that he’s 69 it’s full of tourists. He did say he didn’t mind Sharing the island...they are super friendly here. 


Time on the water goes by quickly!  

We made ourselves lunch at the condo and then strolled through town for some fresh fruit....yum!


Pool side at our home was a little more relaxing...no sharks here :)

I managed to do a bit of homework on the palapa before heading back down the crazy streets of SAN Pedro for a pre dinner walk.....watch out for those golf carts!
Pre dinner snack was at Belize Chocolate.  Mmmmm the Mayan Coconut was sooo good.  Dinner next door was equally delicious. Bacon wrapped shrimp with a pineapple and cilantro rice along with mango snapper fish with oranges on top of rice.  Sooo good.  Completed that off with Caye Lime tequila cake.

Walked back to the condo in the evening breeze...
We decided to bake our Belizian brownie mix, but needed one more short walk to town for eggs (this time a full dozen).
Ending the night with blogging and baking isn’t a terrible end to our day.

    Caye Lime Tequila Cake must top Florida's Key Lime pie..... sounds so delish! Were there lots of colourful fish besides the sharks and rays?

      Yeah it was pretty good cake...
      And the fish were great...even if D says Hawaii is better. Lots of conch shells :)

A little bubbly

This was the very first night that I officially slept well.  Finally transitioned over to the Dutch time zone.... Started the day with by filling the stomach with a good Dutch style breakfast.  If you're not Dutch could you guess what it is? With full stomachs we headed out for the day.  It was a rather frightening start down the skinny Dutch little road.  It barely can handle a bike and a car passing each other.  So to our surprise a massive semi truck was barreling down the road.  We pulled over in a pullout but  became trapped between a large truck and the canal. That canal was not looking too pretty for a swim.... Glad we didn't end up going for that swim and the we had no extra rental car bills to pay as the truck nearly missed the sideview mirror.  After safely arriving to the park n' ride we caught the bus.  This is a fantastic system if you're in Holland!  It cost 5 Euro to park the car and ride the bus for up to 5 people! ...

Trips and treasures

A little while ago I put the link back up on my social media page from a blog about Mother's Day.  Although I get very emotional about the day and the upcoming to the day with my precious Mom being in heaven, I do remember that I have the honour of celebrating motherhood and celebrating with other mothers in my life.  I know it can be a difficult day for many in different ways.   My one little guy who hangs out with me a lot gave me a special treat when I was down....how can you not resist his smile, with a card, cup of water and an apple all delivered with that big smile and even bigger heart. Shortly after that day I was given the privilege of going on a much desired field trip with my daughter.  If you know me at all, or even through this blog you know how much I desire the ocean and the wonders of it.  This trip to Salt Spring Islands did not fail me or my wonder of our wonderful creator.  We have so much more to experience from the ocean..... ...

 Turned the calendar to 2021 a while ago and just have not sat down behind the computer to type away in a while.  I just had those summer 2020 blog posts waiting to be completed.  At last that goal was accomplished and I feel like the rest of 2020 went awash......I made a video to summarize our year and felt like that was good enough to complete the year.   I won't say our 2021 had the most marvellous start.  Our family was in isolation and I can't remember what day it was of 24 days being inside our home that we rolled the new year in.  However we were loved upon by many family members and friends over the time of being indoors.  Also what better time in the world to be "stuck" at home as you can get your grocery deliveries and any other shopping done and delivered all within 24 hours.  We did not suffer.  We may have been a little stir crazy at points, but we made the best of it!
